Butler County obtained its territory from
Hamilton county in 1803. The county seat is Hamilton. It is named
for General
Richard Butler, who died in 1791 fighting Indians in northern Ohio. Butler's
army marched out of Fort Hamilton, where the city of Hamilton now stands. Cities, towns, and
villages (past and present) of Butler County are Beckett Ridge, College Corner,
Fairfield, Hamilton, Hanover Township, Jacksonburg, Lemon Township, Liberty
Township, Madison Township, Middletown, Milford Township, Millville, Monroe,
Morgan Township, New Miami, Olde West Chester, Oxford, Reily Township, Ross,
Seven Mile, Sharonville, Somerville, St. Clair Township, South Middletown,
Trenton, Wayne Township, West Chester Township, and Wetherington.
*Butler County, Ohio, in the south west part of the state, contains
480 square miles. The Miami river and Miami canal cross it, and it
is a populous and wealthy county. Capital, Hamilton. There were in
1840, neat cattle 21,903, sheep 29,172, swine 63,828; wheat 318,720
bushels produced, rye 29,291, Indian corn 2,243,561, buckwheat 1,760,
barley 12,656, oats 550,990, potatoes 46,035, sugar 39,860 pounds;
121 stores, capital $208,430; 2 lumber yards, capital $6,200;
1 fulling mill, 6 woollen factories, 10 tanneries, 49 distilleries,
2 breweries, 3 potteries, 17 flouring mills, 21 grist mills, 33 saw
mills, 4 oil mills, 2 paper factories, 3 printing offices, 1 daily,
2 weekly newspapers. Capital in manufactures $196,775. 2 colleges,
251 students, 1 academy 62 students, 79 schools 3,237 scholars.
Population: 1830, 27,044; 1840, 28,173.
